🌿 Winter Skincare Support: Aromatherapy for Dry, Cracked and Itchy Skin
🌿 Why Winter Skin Becomes Dry, Cracked and Itchy
As the weather gets colder, it’s common for the skin to become dry, tight, flaky or even cracked.
Winter creates a perfect storm for dryness:
1️⃣ Low humidity = more moisture loss
Cold air holds far less moisture.
Indoor heating lowers humidity even further, causing the skin’s water content to evaporate more quickly.
This leads to tightness, flaking and cracking.
2️⃣ Hot water + frequent washing strip natural oils
Hot water and repeated washing dissolve the natural lipids that protect the skin.
Once this protective barrier becomes thin,
irritation, redness and itchiness appear easily.
3️⃣ A weakened skin barrier
Dryness + cold wind + friction → the outer layer of the skin becomes fragile.
It reacts more strongly to everyday triggers, creating discomfort and inflammation.
4️⃣ Microbiome imbalance
The skin’s beneficial bacteria prefer stable humidity and temperature.
Winter stressors can disturb this balance, making the skin more reactive
and leading to the familiar cycle of dryness → itchiness → scratching → more dryness.

Other supportive oils

🧴 Gentle Winter Skincare Tips
Small changes can make a big difference:
- Use lukewarm water instead of hot
- Choose mild, pH-balanced cleansers
- Pat skin dry rather than rubbing
- Moisturise little and often
- For very dry skin: apply oil first, then lotion to lock in moisture
- Avoid overwashing with hot water to protect the microbiome
These habits help strengthen the moisture barrier and restore comfort.
🌸 About the Blend I Made This Week
This week, I created a gentle hand lotion for a family member whose hands were becoming very dry, peeling and starting to crack with the cold weather.
To help everything blend evenly, I first mixed the essential oils with a small amount of carrier oil and then combined that mixture with a non-fragranced natural lotion.
In my recent Instagram post, you can also see this visually. Please take a look @AromaYasumi
The results were surprisingly quick — the skin felt softer almost instantly, and within just a few applications, the cracks and peeling had already improved.
On the first day, it’s especially helpful to apply the lotion after every hand wash to support the skin barrier while it recovers.
✨ If you’d like something tailored to your skin…
I also create Bespoke Blends —personalised aromatherapy oils crafted individually for your skin, wellbeing and scent preferences.
Each blend is made fresh after receiving your consultation form, so your daily self-care can feel like a small, grounding ritual.
