How Essential Oils Support the Mind – Part 2
Share
When we inhale an essential oil, its molecules travel through the olfactory system and reach the limbic system — the part of the brain deeply connected to emotions, memory, and stress response. But their influence doesn’t stop there: research suggests that certain aromatic compounds can also interact with the autonomic nervous system, shifting heart rate, breathing, and even hormone release. This means that a simple act of breathing in a scent can create ripple effects throughout the body — helping us release tension, regain perspective, and reconnect with a calmer, more positive state of mind.
In my previous post (Part 1), I introduced some of the key therapeutic properties of essential oils for the mind — including sedative, antidepressant, cephalic, and balancing effects. Today, I’d like to continue this journey with a few more properties that show just how versatile essential oils can be in supporting emotional wellbeing.
Anxiolytic (Easing Anxiety)
These oils help to reduce feelings of anxiety and inner restlessness. They are often grounding and soothing, bringing a sense of inner safety and calm.
Examples: Lavender, Bergamot, Frankincense, Yuzu
Adaptogenic (Supporting Resilience)
Adaptogenic oils can help the mind and body cope with stress more effectively, encouraging a sense of balance during challenging times. They don’t overstimulate or sedate but instead promote adaptability.
Examples: Rosemary, Sweet Basil, Scots Pine, Thyme, Elemi
Euphoric (Encouraging Joy and Lightness)
Euphoric oils have an uplifting quality that can brighten mood, inspire optimism, and restore a sense of joy. They are sometimes used to ease emotional heaviness and reawaken enthusiasm.
Examples: May Chang, Frangipani, Tangerine/Mandarine, Ylang Ylang
Grounding (Stabilising and Centering)
Grounding oils bring steadiness to the emotions and calm scattered thoughts. Their deeper, earthy aromas often provide a reassuring anchor in times of change or uncertainty.
Examples: Vetiver, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Hinoki, Copaiba Balsam
These properties highlight how essential oils can support not only our bodies but also our emotions and resilience in daily life. By carefully choosing scents we personally enjoy and connect with, we can enhance the positive effects and bring more calm, clarity, and joy into our routines.
Together, Part 1 and Part 2 provide a wider picture of how aromatherapy nurtures the mind — from calming the nervous system to inspiring joy and grounding us in the present moment.
