🌿 Stress, Cortisol & Hormone Balance: How Aromatherapy Can Help

🌿 Stress, Cortisol & Hormone Balance: How Aromatherapy Can Help

Chronic stress is something many of us live with — but did you know it could be quietly affecting your hormones, mood, sleep, and overall wellbeing?

In a recent IFA webinar, a speaker from Functional Wellness introduced the “Triangle of Hormonal Health.” This concept explains how long-term stress — and elevated levels of cortisol (the primary stress hormone) — can ripple through multiple systems in the body.

What is Cortisol?

Often called the “stress hormone,” cortisol plays a vital role in helping us wake up, respond to challenges, regulate blood sugar, and manage inflammation. It follows a natural daily rhythm known as the diurnal cortisol curve.

However, ongoing stress can disrupt this rhythm — keeping cortisol levels high or even depleting them over time. Both scenarios can lead to imbalance.

The Triangle of Hormonal Health

Functional wellness practitioners describe hormone balance through this interconnected triangle:

  • Stress hormones (like cortisol)
  • Sex hormones (especially progesterone and estrogen)
  • Blood sugar regulation

When cortisol remains high over time, the body may prioritise making stress hormones over sex hormones — especially progesterone, which shares the same precursor as cortisol (pregnenolone). This can lead to:

  • Lower progesterone levels
  • Relative estrogen dominance
  • Mood swings, fatigue, and sleep disruption
  • Digestive and immune system strain

This is sometimes described in functional medicine as “pregnenolone steal” — where the body diverts hormonal resources toward stress, leaving little for balance and repair.

When the System Stops Listening

Our body normally regulates cortisol via the HPA axis — a communication loop between the brain and adrenal glands. But with long-term stress, this system becomes dysregulated, causing the body to stay in overdrive.

You might feel:

  • Wired but tired
  • Overwhelmed or anxious
  • Constantly fatigued
  • Unable to truly relax

Aromatherapy’s Role in Resetting

A recent IFA research study found that regular inhalation of a specific essential oil blend helped significantly lower cortisol levels in both hair and saliva.

This means:

  • More balanced cortisol curve
  • Improved nervous system regulation
  • Greater emotional resilience
