Most respiratory ailments are caused by viruses, and many essential oils carry powerful antiviral properties. In addition, I select essential oils known for their expectorant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, your blend may help calm a stubborn cough, ease tight breathing, or reduce sinus-related pressure.

When stress is contributing to your symptoms, I may combine this with relaxing oils. If you’re prone to frequent colds, I may include immune-stimulating oils to support your body’s defences.

Steam inhalation blends can be especially helpful at the first sign of a cold — supporting sore throats, headaches, infections, coughs, and nasal congestion. They may also help ease discomfort linked to sinusitis or seasonal irritation.
